The Next Steps in Bringing Her Home

Once we made the decision to move forward with the Endeavour 44’ TrawlerCat, the excitement was real—but so was the reality of everything that still needed to happen before she could officially become ours. Buying a boat is one thing. Bringing her into your life, safely and properly, is another.

Because this was a private party purchase, one of the first things we had to do was find a reputable documentation company to handle the paperwork. We wanted everything done correctly and cleanly from the start—no loose ends, no confusion later. It was important to us that the transfer of ownership was smooth and fully compliant, so we took our time choosing a company we trusted to guide us through that process.

Next came the surveys. Joe especially was very focused on this step, given his background as an electrician and his attention to detail. We arranged for both a marine survey and an engine survey, knowing we needed a clear and honest picture of the boat’s condition before moving forward completely. It was nerve-wracking, but also reassuring—this was our chance to really understand what we were stepping into and make sure we were making the right decision.

At the same time, we started working on insurance. That turned out to be its own journey. Finding coverage isn’t as simple as insuring a car or even a house. We spent time gathering quotes, comparing policies, and making sure we understood exactly what was and wasn’t covered. It was all part of building a solid foundation for this new life we were stepping into.

And then came one of the most exciting—and challenging—questions of all: where would we keep her?

We knew we wanted to base the boat on the Chesapeake Bay, a place we had both grown to appreciate for its beauty, history, and access to incredible cruising grounds. But finding the right marina was no small task. We looked at locations, slip availability, access to services, and proximity to our current land based home. This wasn’t just about docking a boat—it was about choosing a home port.

Each step brought its own challenges, but also a growing sense of momentum. With every document signed, survey completed, and conversation had, this dream started to feel less like an idea and more like a reality taking shape in front of us.

We weren’t just buying a boat anymore. We were building the foundation for the next chapter of our lives.
